What we do
Over nearly two centuries the business has grown from a bar and small grocery store, to encompass Topline Flynns hardware store, a SuperValu supermarket, and an Agri & Fuel business. Overall we employ more than 75 people in Lackagh. In addition, the complex hosts a range of invaluable associated businesses including: The Beauty Boudoir, Sheer Bliss Hair Salon, Elements Acupuncture & Yoga, Lackagh Pharmacy, Turloughmore Post Office, Treat Café, Carlos’ Car Wash & Valet Service, Flynn’s Bar, and The Turloughmore Health Centre. These associated businesses employ a further 30+ people, and we hope to expand the range of services further over the coming years by introducing more rental businesses into our complex.
It has been an incredible journey to see the business develop from humble beginnings to a wide range of services that better meet the needs of the vibrant and modern community. Julien Flynn and his wife Emma have been Owners and Directors of the business since 2006, and are now steering it towards further growth and success.
Flynns of Lackagh Ltd. was established by Mr. Thomas Kearney in 1842 as a bar and very small grocery store. Thomas’s son Richard Kearney then took over the business in the late 1800s/early 1900s, and later passed the business onto his daughter Maureen Kearney. Maureen married Michael Flynn, a successful businessman and cattle dealer from Tubber, Co. Offaly, and together they grew the business.Thomas Flynn, Maureen and Michael’s son took over in the 1950s and began to further expand the business.
Thomas and his wife Carmel eventually grew the business into a very successful supermarket, hardware store, and agricultural and fuel merchants. These businesses were built on the land beside the existing bar and grocery store. In 2001 Thomas and his son Julien expanded the business even further by building a new 10,000 square foot SuperValu supermarket on a site next to the old supermarket, leaving space to grow the Topline hardware store too. The new SuperValu was one of the largest and leading supermarkets in rural Ireland. In 2011 Julien and Emma then extended and refurbished Topline Flynns, bringing a much larger hardware and DIY product range in a more modern and up to date environment.
The local community
Topline Flynns believes that by offering quality service, exceptional value and great customer service across a range of key services that we are enabling the community to shop locally with confidence, alleviating the need for costly and time-consuming trips into the city, and helping support jobs in the area.
The local community has always been of central importance at Topline Flynns, and this was recognised when Julien Flynn was presented with a Corporate Social Responsibility Award by the Mayor of County Galway and Minister Phil Hogan in April 2012. The award recognised our sustained efforts to strengthen links with and to positively impact the local community. Examples include our handover of two acres for a local graveyard when no other land was available in the area, sponsoring and supporting the local Turloughmore Hurling and Camogie Clubs, the Claregalway Football Club, the children’s playground, Lackagh National School, Claregalway Secondary School and many more charitable causes and events.
The Topline group
Offering our customers such a broad and valuable range of services has been central to our plans and we are delighted to work with such a positive and proactive group as Topline. Becoming part of Ireland’s largest DIY buying group Topline in 1989, has been a crucial support to the survival and success of our business. Alongside the other 150 plus stores nationwide that are affiliated to the Topline group, we benefit from its bulk purchasing power, from its relationship with the world’s largest independent hardware group, Ace Hardware, and from its ongoing investments in marketing, staff training and merchandising. Collectively, these factors allow Topline Flynns to compete effectively with domestic and international chains, like Chadwicks, Heiton Buckley, Woodies, B&Q and Homebase; and to offer our customers competitive prices, better friendly service, and a welcoming shopping environment.
It’s not every day that a business can say it has served not only its local community but much of the west coast of Ireland for over 170 years, and we hope that Topline Flynns, along with all the other businesses within Flynns of Lackagh Ltd., can continue to do this for all our customers past, present and future. Together we are all working hard to ensure we have everything you need right here in Lackagh. We are still growing from strength to strength thanks to the support and custom from not only our local community but from customers from much further afield.
